What to look for in a robot vacuum and mop

Look beyond suction to furniture clearance, rugs, dock placement and everyday care.

The quick answer

Choose for your floor plan and maintenance routine. Measure under-furniture clearance, understand how the robot handles rugs while mopping, and allow access around the dock. Navigation and brush design can be as important as a headline suction figure.

Start with your home

List the hard floors, carpets, rugs and thresholds the robot will cross. Measure beneath furniture at the lowest point, including crossbars. A low-profile robot is useful only if it can also enter and exit the space reliably. Check whether rooms are connected by passable thresholds or stairs; a robot does not automatically clean between floors.

Understand the mop system

Rotating pads and vibrating pads take different approaches. For mixed floors, find out whether mops lift, detach or avoid rugs, and check the conditions for each behavior. Tall or delicate rugs need special consideration. Do not use a mop on a floor that the flooring manufacturer says should not be wet-cleaned.

Make space for the station

An automated dock reduces recurring tasks but does not remove all of them. Tanks need filling and emptying, dust bags need replacement, and cleaning trays need attention. Leave enough room to access the tanks and for the robot to approach. A refill-and-drainage version adds installation requirements that the standard tank model does not have.

Buy for daily mess

If hair is your main issue, compare brush construction and how it is cleaned. For kitchens and entryways, look at mopping behavior and obstacle management. Keep cables and small loose objects off the floor even when obstacle avoidance is included. Check consumable costs, local support and app controls before deciding.

Your questions, answered.

Is suction the most important specification?

It is one factor. Brush design, navigation, floor contact and maintenance also affect the buying decision.

Does a self-cleaning dock eliminate maintenance?

No. It automates tasks, but tanks, brushes, filters and consumables still need care.
